Democratic Republic of Congo Featured Opportunities:

AIM began work in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which was then a Belgian colony, in 1912. By God's grace the work has prospered over the years. Today there are over 2,265 congregations belonging to the church that was established through AIM's ministry, the Communauté Evangélique au Centre de l'Afrique (CECA), and together they have a total membership of well over half a million members. The denomination also has several Bible schools and a theological seminary at Bunia, which is run jointly by a group of missions and churches that offers programs going beyond first degree level.

There are hospitals at Banda in the far north, Rethy in the center, and Oicha in the south of the church's area. There is also a large training hospital that was founded at Nyankunde in 1966 by five missions under the leadership of AIM missionary, Dr. Carl Becker. Sadly, in November 2002, this hospital was attacked and became the scene of a tremendous slaughter stemming from long-standing tribal conflicts. Currently, the facility is not in operation.

Other ministries have included extensive educational work with nursery, primary and secondary schools, as well as teacher training and veterinary/agricultural colleges.

Ongoing war and conflicts since the 1996 1997 civil war, which ousted the long standing ruler of Congo, President Mobutu, have seriously impacted AIM's ministry in Congo, and we have greatly reduced the number of personnel working there.

The church of Congo has suffered through these years, facing often rampant inflation, poor communications, a collapsed budget and tribal divisions. In the face of these many trials they have remained strong. Christ has built, and continues to build, his church, and we see signs of his blessing upon it, even in the midst of the apparent chaos and despair. Despite the present uncertainties we look forward to continuing ministry within Congo. We ask prayer for guidance, and for the establishment of a mature and growing church, with godly leaders who preach God's Word in all its richness and live by the power of his Spirit.
